NEXT MEETING: TUESDAY 28 April 2026 at 7:00 PM

Our April speaker will be Jonathan Abels
In August 2025, Jonathan Abels became managing director of the Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Center. He has served as executive director of the Duke Center for International Development for many years, which jointly manages the Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Center with UNC Global Affairs.
The Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Center is one of seven Rotary Peace Centers worldwide, and invites selected fellows from around the worldto enroll in graduate studies at either Carolina or Duke. Abels was part of the team that proposed Rotary International establish the center almost 25 years ago.
He was a Rotary Youth Exchange Student and lived one year in southern Sweden with a family. He learned Swedish, attended a high school and had many unique experiences, including attending the Nobel Prize Ceremony and visiting then–Leningrad in the Soviet Union. Having lived his entire life in Ohio, that experience opened his eyes and mind to many new ideas, ways of living and opportunities. He had a greater interest in international politics, different cultures and history. These interests shaped his academic pursuits and later his career. He was always grateful for his Rotary experience and the impact it had on his life at a critical moment.
We hope you will join us!
