Our February speakers will be Kathleen Doherty and Ray Matsumiya.

Kathleen Doherty is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and a Certified Domestic Violence Professional (ICDVP) serving as the Executive Director of LeMayian Hospital Community Health Services in Kitengela, Kenya. 

Kathleen comes from an extensive background with experience leading non-profits focused on the intervention and prevention of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), HIV/AIDS, and child protection and welfare. 

In 2018, Kathleen was awarded the Rotary Peace Fellowship and completed an extensive program on peace and conflict studies at the Peace Center at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. In 2020, she was selected as a Positive Peace Activator by Rotary International/Institute of Economics & Peace, where she co-founded the Racial Equity Project, highlighting the critical link between diversity, equity, and inclusion and peacebuilding. 

Kathleen also has professional certificates in mediation from the Center for Conflict Resolution (CCR) and Northwestern University, as well as certificates in Unarmed Civilian Protection from Nonviolence Peaceforce, and Refugee Protection and the Rights and Process of (Re) Settlement from Northwestern University.

Kathleen is the current Board President and Treasurer of the Rotary Peace Fellow Alumni Association (RPFAA), a 503 c3 providing membership and support services to over 1,800 alumni. She has provided training on Positive Peace, gender equity, and SGBV to members of the Rotary Family. In 2020, she was a founding member of the RPFAA Global Peace Conference, and in 2021 served as the Global Peace Conference African/MENA Committee Co-Chair.  Her leadership was instrumental as a member of the planning committee for the 2023 RPF Leadership Retreat in Morocco, the 2023 RI/IEP Peace Activator Retreat in Nepal, the 2023 RPF Peace Symposium in Birmingham, AL, and the 2024 N. American/Caribbean IEP/RI Peace Activator training.

Inspired by a mother from Hiroshima, Ray Matsumiya has devoted his professional career to unofficial diplomacy, cross-cultural exchange and peacebuilding. 

Ray joined The Jubitz Foundation in 2022 to enhance the scope and impact of peace oriented activities in the Rotary International ecosystem. He was the lead organizer for the groundbreaking Rotary Peace Park exhibit at the 2023 RI convention and is the past president of the Rotary Club of International Peace. 

During his over two-decade career, Ray has directed organizations that implemented peacebuilding programs in twelve countries for thousands of participants in partnership with the US Dept. of State, UNESCO, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and others. He has been an invited speaker at TEDx, the Massachusetts State House, Dayton International Peace Museum, US embassy of Tunis and universities such as M.I.T and Tufts University. He has also published pieces in USA Today and Inkstick Media. 

Ray received his Master’s degree in conflict resolution from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and is a certified mediator under M.G.L. ch.233 § 23C. He lives in Cambridge, MA with his family and enjoys chess, sculpture and playing basketball.
